With an intensive one-on-one approach, this six-week (148 hours) training course is designed for inexperienced drivers interested in learning how to drive a tractor trailer, obtain an IC Instruction Permit, and to maximize the successful attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License.

Laboratory, classroom, and driving instruction (range and street) will include lessons and training materials from the Trucking: Tractor-Trailer Driver Handbook/Workbook, second edition (developed by the Professional Truck Driver Institute, Inc. (PTDI) and Thompson Delmar Learning). The State of Alaska, Division of Motor Vehicles Commercial Driver License Manual will also be used as additional guidance. Some of the topics covered will include:

  • Basic Operation
  • Safe Operating Practices
  • Advanced Operating Practices
  • Non-Vehicle Activities
  • Vehicle Systems & Reporting Malfunctions

The VTRC Instructor will be responsible for trainee appointment and scheduling of the CDL driving test. The VTRC will supply all driving equipment to take the Division of Motor Vehicles, Commercial Drivers License IC (learners permit), and Class A driving tests.

Drug Test required including other prerequisites for CDL training.

Participant Eligibility & Financial Aid

This course is open to the general public. Tribal members are encouraged to obtain CDL tuition assistance from Ozzie Sheakley, Employment Training Specialist of the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, Employment and Training Division. Non-tribal members are encouraged to contact the Department of Labor (DOL) Work Force Development, Job Training & Work Readiness at (907) 465-5547 for tuition assistance.
