
VTRC's
History
- In 1993, the Central Council strategically
planned to develop job training and small business programs to create an empowered
and self-sufficient tribal membership.
- In 1994 a two-year Administration
for Native American Programs (ANA) grant was applied for and received to conduct
the schematic planning and project design of a proposed training center.
- In 1995 a 3-year Department of
Education, Indian Vocational Education Project grant was applied for and received
which funded small business, computer training and child care.
- In 1996 the Central Council, in
alliance with five Tribes of Southeast Alaska--Hoonah Indian Association,
Douglas Indian Association, Skaqua Traditional Council, Chilkoot Indian Association
and Organized Village of Saxman--applied for and received a two-million dollar
grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the construction
of the VTRC. These six tribes are the equity owners of the VTRC.
- On October 1, 1997, the State of
Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education issued a certificate of Institutional
Authorization to Operate.
- On September 3, 1998, the City
& Borough of Juneau issued a Certificate of Occupancy.
- On September 9, 1999 the VTRC opened
its doors at the 3239 Hospital Drive location.
